You probably won’t even notice the first signs of gum disease

Your mouth is covered in bacteria. These bacteria live off of the food left behind after you eat, and can form sticky, gooey plaque.

Plaque releases acid that weakens your tooth enamel and irritates your gums. If you don’t floss and brush regularly, and get a dental cleaning every six months, plaque can harden, and then your gums will start sending up flares for help: they’ll let you know they’re in trouble.

Swollen gums ( gingivitis)

Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. It involves sensitive, swollen gums that bleed easily. If your gums bleed while you are flossing or brushing, this could be  sign of gum disease and a signal that your gums are not healthy. But there’s hope. Regular dental cleanings can help stop gingivitis before it does permanent damage.

From gingivitis to periodontitis

If you do not seek treatment, your gums will pull away from your teeth and form pockets. Plaque thrives in dental pockets which can soon become infected. Bacteria and your body’s response to fight them can break down the bone and ligaments that hold your teeth in.

You risk losing your teeth

As gum disease progresses, your teeth will become loose. Left unchecked, your teeth may become so loose that the only option is for us to remove them. That is, if they don’t fall out on their own.

We hope we’ve scared you!

Gum disease is treacherous stuff, but it can be treated. The sooner you start, the better off your teeth will be, not to mention your overall health.
