In special circumstances, oral surgery is needed to treat tooth pain or damage. But don’t let the name scare you. Unlike traditional surgery, oral surgery rarely requires a hospital stay. In fact, many oral surgery procedures performed in our dental offices including tooth removal, wisdom teeth extraction, dental implants, and bone grafting simply require a local anesthetic and some over-the-counter pain medication.
Your adult teeth will stay permanent in most cases but there are times when tooth extraction becomes necessary. Trauma, severe decay, infection and over-crowding are all typical reasons for getting a tooth pulled. Wisdom teeth removal is also a common reason for tooth extraction, especially around age 17-25 (which is normally when these large back molars come in).
Getting a tooth pulled is a routine procedure at Brident. There is nothing to fear and our skilled team will guide you through the entire process. And once your problem tooth has been removed, Brident provides a variety of tooth replacement options.
Wisdom Tooth Extraction
One of the most common reasons for tooth removal is wisdom tooth extraction (especially for teens and young adults). As the last permanent teeth to arrive, wisdom teeth can lack the room they need and tend to push into other teeth, which can result in tooth damage and pain.
Brident’s oral surgeons can use X-rays to determine if you or your teen needs to have wisdom teeth removed before they cause any damage or pain.
Dental implants are tiny screw-like posts that are attached to your jawbone and used to secure an artificial tooth. They’re usually made of lightweight titanium or titanium alloys and are designed to last a lifetime. Dental implants actually become fused to your bone, which makes them exceptionally sturdy and durable.
Dental implants can be an excellent option for replacing missing teeth. Best of all, the dental implant procedure can be performed right in a Brident office. In some cases, a dental implant can even be placed the same day a tooth is pulled.
Dental Bone Grafting
Tooth loss not only affects your physical appearance, it also hurts the bone that surrounds and supports your missing tooth. In fact, this supporting bone can actually begin to deteriorate and shrink over time.
Brident often recommends bone grafting to prevent supporting bone loss. While it may sound frightening, bone grafting is a routine and painless procedure that involves filling the holes in your jawbone with laboratory-processed bone material. Over time, your body fills in the area with new bone and soft tissue, which helps reattach the tooth to your jaw.
